|   | Description |   |
|   | Margherita Allan, is a Textile and Mixed Media Artist creating art in a light-filled studio on the out-skirts of Ngaruawahia in the Waikato.
She has always loved creating but after some horrible years of "taking" art at high school, she has only just recently started creating her own pieces of art.
Margherita started quilting 2 years ago but found it hard to follow a pattern without wanting to add her own variations.
"I start with fabric and then add anything else that will finish a piece; paint, dye, fibre, glue, beads, buttons and wire. No rules, if it works for me I use it".
She made a Dresden Plate quilting design using men's ties; the quilting group didn’t understand it.
In 2008 Margherita completed an ArtsBiz course and the Dresden Plate ties were shown to the other artists, who did understand it.
"Other people getting my idea of art was an amazing feeling and I wanted to make more tie art. The current trend of recycling allowed
me to create thru my love of re- introducing pre-loved items such as material, clothing and jewellery. These are hidden treasures and I enjoy using various techniques to give them new life as art."
Margherita is having her first exhibition “Ties From The Past” at Twin Rivers Art Centre in Ngaruawahia, opening on Sept 4th and running thru to Oct 4th. The 12 items exhibited are an exploration of the art, beauty, and mystery of men’s ties.
If you are interested in any details, please contact Twin Rivers Art Centre Manager Lianne Van Den Bemd at twinriversartc.t@xtra.co.nz or (07) 824 8148 during the time of the exhibition.
Commissions can be taken, as this art is a great re”tie”rment gift, using the ties from a mans working career.
